7 Tips to be Healthy, Happy and Beautiful From a Former Miss Universe
It’s been almost a decade since I won the coveted and prestigious title of Miss Universe. And over the years since then I’ve had my share of struggle to find myself in this -sometimes overwhelming – industry of high expectations, ups and downs, and image and weight obsession. What I’ve learned to do is focus on making myself happy with me, instead of pleasing everyone else. I started my blog Healthy Happy Beautiful Life (hhblife.com) to help other people achieve their best potential, feel good about themselves, and take their health seriously. Here’re my top 7 tips on how to be the best that you can be.
1. Wake up fresh.
A good day starts with a well rested body and mind, so make sure you get enough sleep . You will know the right amount of sleep your body needs by seeing how you feel when you wake up. Energize yourself by doing something physical for a few minutes right as you wake up, which will give you an instant mood and energy boost. That could be jumping jacks, skipping rope, burpees, or sun salutations. Then take a few moments to breathe deeply (preferably outside), to center and ground yourself.

2. Hydrate the right way.
I must admit, I don’t alway practice this one, and forget to drink more water. But I’m always reminded of why it’s so important to stay hydrated, when I get headaches, fatigue, and other signs of dehydration. Drink a cup of warm water with a juice of half a lemon, or 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. This will alkalinize your body and infuse you with vitamins. Then, fill up a container (1.5-2 L)with water and jazz it up with your favorite flavor (cranberry, black currant, orange or cucumber), and sip throughout the day.
3. Listen to your body for hunger/fullness cues.
You CAN eat whatever you want and stay fit and healthy. Instead of counting calories, or cutting out certain food groups, all you have to learn is how to be in tune with your body. Your body knows best, just listen to the cues you are getting. Eat when you’re hungry, and stop eating once you’re full. Once you learn how to do that you’ll never have to diet again!
4. Do any exercise, even just for 7 minutes.
We don’t all have 30 minutes for proper exercise every day. But believe me, even 7 minutes a day can get you toned and keep you in shape. I don’t believe anyone who says they don’t have 7 minutes to spare. Instead of wasting time on your phone checking your Facebook feed, get up (wherever you are, at home or office) and do this workout. You will never regret it! (Link)
5. Check in with your feelings throughout the day.
Overeating can happen because of emotions or stress. The best way to avoid this is to check in periodically with yourself about how you’re feeling to curb emotional eating. If you feel stressed, overwhelmed, unappreciated, over-worked or anything else negative that you know will trigger those unhealthy cravings, ask yourself what you would want to make yourself feel better (other than food). It could be a massage, cuddling up with your loved one or your pet in bed, getting into comfy clothes, reading a book, going for a walk, or anything else that makes you feel peaceful, relaxed, and comfortable.
6. Do something you are passionate about for at least 10 minutes a day.
It’s difficult to find time for yourself while balancing career, housework, family and friends. You need time for yourself to be a healthy and happy mom, colleague, spouse or friend.
Do you have a passion? A hobby that you just love losing yourself in? For me, a beautiful, complete day can’t go by without doing something I absolutely love – music. It could be either listening to it or playing it. Maybe for you it’s painting, drawing/sketching, writing, dancing, yoga, or singing. Make sure that you do this activity by yourself, for yourself. This is your time to do something just for you, to feed your soul. Passion every day fills our lives with purpose. Cherish that time!
7. End the day with gratitude.
Finally, end your day with a little bit of reflection and gratitude. Put your computer and phone away, get ready for bed and take a few minutes to think about what were the highlights of your day. Feel grateful for that. If there were some negative parts of your day, reflect on how you can prevent the same thing from reoccurring, or how you could’ve dealt with the situation better.
