My family members suffer from low bone density. What is the best diet to improve the quality of our bones? Are there any exercises to improve bone density and prevent osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a serious health concern, especially for older people. There could be nutritional deficiencies that your family members have, and that should be addressed with your doctor. Once you determine the cause of low bone density, your doctor may recommend certain supplements, such as Vitamin D, Vitamin K, and/or Calcium. A diet rich in these vitamins could potentially prevent future bone density loss and osteoporosis. Foods such as eggs, oily fish (salmon, sardines, tuna), and fortified...

Foods such as eggs, oily fish (salmon, sardines, tuna), and fortified dairy products are high in Vitamin D. For Calcium-rich foods, try adding broccoli, kale, low-fat dairy, and oily fish to your diet.
Exercise has been proven to increase bone density, particularly strength training (squats, lunges, pushups), and weight lifting. Also, cardio exercises such as running/jogging, fast walking, stair climbing, jumping rope, and jump training are great bone density building sports.

Before this upcoming bikini season, I want to get into shape and focus on a few areas, particularly upper legs, butt, and lower abs. Any tips or motivation? I'm lazy to do squats and lunges like I know I should.

If you want to target your upper legs and gluteus (butt), you should of course do those lunges and squats that we all hate so much. But if you really can't commit to this exercise routine, my suggestion is to invest into the Xbox 360 Kinect video game. www.xbox.com/kinect

Try Just Dance, Dance Central, Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports, Zumba Fitness, and Your Shape Fitness games.
These video games require you to move, jump, run in place, dance, reach, kick and swing your arms - and believe me your muscles will be sore the next day! Incorporate playing this game for an hour into your daily routine and you'll get into amazing shape without ever going to the gym. You'll train your muscles and break a good sweat while playing. My favorite game for legs and butt is the Reflex Ridge on Kinect Adventures disk.
As for lower abs, I'm afraid the only thing you can do is tons and tons of crunches and sit-ups. There's no other way around it!

I always get sick during the first few days of my period and I cannot do anything for at least a week. Usually I suffer from migraine. After that I can no longer go back to the exercise routine I tried to create. How do you cope with symptoms of PMS? And what should I do to keep the exercise routine going?
- A:

What you are experiencing is very common with a lot of women. My advice to you is to take a week off exercise during the week of your period. If you are not feeling well, don't push your body beyond its limits. Instead, focus on light stretching and yoga. A yoga pose that helps me relieve some of the symptoms is: lie on your back with your butt against the wall and your legs up so you form a 90 degree angle. You can do that on the floor or on your bed. Close your eyes and stay there for 5 minut...

You can also take some painkillers for your migraine or stomach cramps. When you feel better, resume your regular exercise routine. There's nothing wrong with taking a week off. Just get back on track when you can. Stick to regular exercise the other 3 weeks when you feel well.

I’ve seen many ladies that are skinny but look unhealthy and also have a cellulite problem. It seems like even when you diet you can still have fat and cellulite. Can I get rid of it by dieting without exercise?

Dieting alone is not enough to look fit and healthy, and for cellulite to completely go away. The problem with cellulite is that some people are lucky to have been genetically blessed with good skin tone and texture, while others are not. For those unlucky ones, even dieting and weight loss will not remove cellulite. Exercise can definitely help though. When you develop muscle tissue, your body looks more toned and you skin appears smoother.

When you develop muscle tissue, your body looks more toned and you skin appears smoother.
The reason why you see some skinny girls looking unhealthy is because they don’t exercise, and therefore have no muscle tone. This makes them look soft and saggy. By training your muscles regularly (lifting weights or doing Pilates or yoga) your entire body will look tight, toned and healthy.
There are other ways to reduce the appearance of cellulite, such as expensive creams, even more expensive laser treatments, or cheaper but not so effective home remedies. And then, it only works as long as you are using the treatment. As soon as you stop, the cellulite comes back. Home remedies such as rubbing ground coffee beans on problem areas can stimulate the tissue under the skin and make cellulite less visible temporarily.
