Surrogacy

Health

Until recently, infertility was a diagnosis that was difficult or impossible to cope with. Even today, thousands of women and men cannot conceive for a variety of reasons – surgery, congenital abnormalities, or for unknown reasons. Not long ago (in 1978), medicine made a breakthrough, giving a new hope to childless couples – IVF procedure was successfully carried out. Since then, this method of treatment has brought happiness and prosperity to many families. However, what about mothers who cannot bear their child? Contraindications can be heart diseases, multiple miscarriages, and several unsuccessful IVF procedures. In such a case it is still possible to have a genetically born child thanks to medicine, but it will be carried by a gestational courier – a surrogate mother. The very possibility of such procedure stirred up the public all over the world, and governments of different countries reacted differently – from firm legislative restrictions to a complete ban on the practice. The Ukrainian government turned out to be much more accommodating, and in our country, surrogacy is allowed and stipulated by law. However, there are still many opponents to this method, and the procedure itself has several advantages and disadvantages.

Surrogacy is a procedure in which the egg of one woman (the biological mother), fertilized “in vitro,” is placed in the uterus of another woman (the gestational courier) to carry her to term. It is possible with an appropriate contract between the parties and is regulated by law. There are two forms of surrogacy – with the introduction of a bio-mother’s egg and a surrogate’s egg. The second option is prohibited almost everywhere, because in this case the surrogate mother is the child’s biological mother and has the right to claim her.

Over the years of practice (the IVF procedure has existed for over 40 years) the use of surrogacy has repeatedly caused a storm of discussions even among those who have nothing to do with it. A lot of arguments “for” and “against” have been accumulated, each of which has been refuted. Let’s look at them in detail.

Cons: Surrogacy should not exist because it is unnatural. There is no such thing in living nature.

Comment: A lot of humanity’s inventions have no right to life from this point of view. All medicine is an interference with nature, the natural course of things. In particular, no one condemns the invention of the artificial heart.

Surrogacy is contrary to the purposes of God because it is not without reason that all the churches of the world oppose it. It disunites the family, violates the sanctity of marriage and the sacrament of conception.

Comment: The Christian Bible is full of examples of surrogates being used to carry a child. For example, in the Old Testament, Sarah, Abraham’s wife, who could not bear a child, used a servant girl named Hagar to conceive from her husband and give birth to a son, a descendant of the Arabs.
